It's Bath Time!

Unconventional as it may seem, Mary Monkey enjoys a tumble about in the washing machine at bath time.  She grabs her rubber ducky and sings her little heart out whilst she scrubs behind her ears.  After all of the fun of the spin, Mary puts her feet up to dry out in the sun... and get her balance back!

Mary's Travel Blog - The Maldives

Having travelled via most forms of transport to get here, there is no denying that the 36 hours without sleep is worth every lost minute when you set foot onto your sandy island of paradise that is Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo, Maldives.

Prior to departure, there were the careful deliberations around who would be accompanying Mary on this incredible adventure; a difficult choice as you can imagine.

Mary and Mr Blue snuggled happily into my hand luggage together but somebody (Sunny) just couldn’t be left behind.

So here they are, the three of them enjoying a moment of tranquil reflection on the beach.

As I write this, a small ray has gracefully swept past my feet.  The beautiful reef houses an unimaginable number of different species of fish and aquatic creatures which can not be missed so here is Mary preparing for her next snorkelling adventure.  The island is also home to the frantic bumbling hermit crabs, many of which still display painted numbers on their shells as a reminder of their former days as hermit crab racers from which they have either escaped or retired.  Young black and white tip sharks cruise the shore unsettling the schools of tiny fish that swim in union in the shallows.

The bigger fish and rays know it’s feeding time as they arrive to enjoy their daily treat of fish scraps.

Mary and the boys have enjoyed a few drinks at the bar gazing at the breath taking sun sets with Hari and Lal the kind and attentive barmen.

Finally as we speed along the tranquil waters into the pink sunrise to embark on our way home, we have time to reflect on our amazing experience with those who have become part of our lives and memories.  Thank you to all of the staff and guests at Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo for making our stay so special once again.  We hope to see you again soon and wish you all well with your futures what ever they may bring.

Introducing Witchy's Grimoire

As a creature of magic, Witchy keeps a very special book of spells called a Grimoire.  Witchy keeps notes of her most precious spells, amulets and talisman within this book.

She can be quite misunderstood in her ways so Witchy would like to start to share her story with others, in the hope that people start to open their minds to the beautiful nature of witch craft.  Look out for more about Witchy coming soon.

In the mean time, happy spell casting!

Lepe Beach

After a cool, crisp morning of hunting for treasures on Lepe beach, Mary and Witchy stole a quiet moment to relax and enjoy a flask of one of Witchy’s brews.

We are so lucky to be within easy reach of such a beautiful part of the country.  Find out more about Lepe Country Park and ideas for fun days out and events here http://www3.hants.gov.uk/lepe

Things will be looking a bit different in a couple of weeks as Mary embarks on her next travel adventure.

We will be switching to Mary Monkey’s travel blog whilst we are away and then returning to her ‘behind the scenes’ blog just in time for the website launch.

We felt it was time for a well deserved rest; Mary will be letting her fur down in the Maldivian sun.  Now all she needs to do is decide who will accompany her (other than me of course); my hand luggage isn’t big enough for the whole crew!

Good Friday - Hot Cross Buns

Good Friday is a time for remembrance and tradition.  One such tradition is the eating of hot cross buns.  Whether you enjoy yours hot with lots of butter melted on the toasted halves or just straight from the packet; all are marked with a cross as a sobering reminder of the true meaning of the day.

Enjoy your time with your families over the coming holiday if you are lucky enough to be spending this special time of year with them.

Happy Easter to you all, love Mary Monkey x

Culinary Casualties

Culinary Casualties

Cracking open eggs
Melting some butter
Sloshing in milk
Can get us all of a flutter

But has anyone thought
Of the ingredients involved?
How do they feel
To be in the mix and the fold?

Next time you sink your teeth
Into a cake or a biscuit
Spare a thought
For those ingredients within it

All that being said
Get cracking
Get stuck in!
Get your hands dirty and have a gin!

Crafty Nephews

Mary Monkey would like to send out a big thank you to Riley and Max for their help with the latest costume designs!  As it happens, it was Deborah (mum) who ended up doing most of the work, so thank you to you too!

The scene is starting to be set for the next book; follow Mary's blog to keep up to date with her hard work and fun along the way!

The intention of Mary Monkey and her books has always been to involve the family so enlisting the help of my nieces and nephews is all part of the fun.  I treasure seeing art their work as part of our stories x

A Tribute on International Women's Day

Mary wanted to acknowledge this day to recognise and celebrate the influential women in our lives.

They are always there for you and will stand by you through the good times and the bad.  Should we rise and fall or should we succeed in our ventures, they will be there beside you holding their heads high, proud of you no matter what the outcome.

Please take a moment to celebrate the strength of the women in your life and don't forget to include yourself!

International Men's day is on Saturday 19th November; you will have your tribute too boys but know that you are always in our hearts x

The Adventures of Mary and Max Monkey

Mary has been very excited about the arrival of her new book this week.  We have been as busy as ever getting stock ready to put on our new website which we are preparing to launch very soon!

This is Mary's latest book called 'The Adventures of Mary and Max Monkey'.  Lots of hard work goes into making fun adventures for Mary and her friends to share with you.

She spends all her time coming up with new ideas to create different stories.  We are already working on our next project so we need to get back to work!  See you all soon x

When Witchy Met Froggy

Witchy and Froggy have been inseparable since they met many many years ago on a swamp.  Witchy was out looking for ingredients for one of her potions when she heard a tiny 'ribbet ribbet' coming from the water and went over to investigate.  There, sat happily on a lily pad, was baby Froggy!  He hopped into her basket and off they went home together.

Froggy has been Witchy's familiar ever since.  Being a familiar means that he helps her with her magic spells.  Froggy is her beloved and trusted companion and never leaves her side.

They are growing old gracefully together and keeping up with the times and are rather partial to an occasional pouty selfie!

Story Board

With one book at the printers - 'The Adventures of Mary and Max Monkey', Mary is already starting a story board for her next book!  There really is no rest for the wicked!  Here she is starting to plan out the characters and scenes for her next adventure.

Mary and Jo spend their time working together to dream up new and exciting adventures for Mary and her friends to embark upon.

Of course it's great fun and the sky is the limit, quite literally!  Mary has accompanied Jo on holidays and days out which feature in her earlier books soon to be available via Mary Monkey's website which is coming soon so watch this space!

New Characters Under Development

As ever, it's all go in the 'Mary Monkey and Friends' development departments.

Granny M is working on a new character for the books and Jo is working on another new sock monkey friend for Mary.

Just like Santa's elves in their workshop throughout the year, we are busy knitting and sewing little creatures to create new characters for you to enjoy and make part of your lives and memories as we enjoy having them as part of ours.

I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone involved for your support and for helping to start our new adventure together!

Three Wise Monkeys

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

Mizaru                  Kikazaru                  Iwazaru

The monkeys are depicted in the Japanese folk religion the Kōshin influenced by Chinese Taoism and ancient Shinto origins.  This is particularly relevant as celebrations begin for this  Chinese New Year; the year of the Monkey.

The name is also shared with the classic 1989 comedy featuring Richard Pryor (see no evil) and Gene Wilder (hear no evil).  One of Andrew and Mary's favorite films!

Chinese New Year 2016 - Year of the Monkey

Happy Chinese New Year from the Monkey family!

Monkey's may be mischievous little pranksters but are curious and quick witted which only adds to their charm.

As 2016 brings the start of the year of the Monkey, Mary and her friends and family would like to offer happiness and prosperity to all those celebrating at this special time of year.

恭喜发财 / 恭喜發財

Fairy Hunting

There is nothing Witchy and I enjoy more than a walk in the forest to look for fairies and woodland creatures.

Jo tucks us safely into her coat and off we go into the woods!

We look up trees...

 ...peep behind bushes...

 and we look under roots...

but you will have to wait and see who we meet on our adventures in the woods!

Why don't you go on a fairy hunt this weekend and see what you can find!

Growing Family

It's been another busy evening in our house!  The sock monkey family is ever expanding here with lots of new characters to share adventures with me in my next books.  I will soon be introducing more of my sock friends who may not all be monkeys...!

My new friends don't grow on trees; some are the result of lots of care and patients from Jo our creative director and photographer or Granny M who bought Christmas Bear to life or Mumsie (Yvonne) who bought Witchey into our lives.  Both Granny M and Mumsie are gifted with a talent for knitting.  This is not a talent that Jo possesses, unless the creature happens to be square - Owl.  Jo specialises  in monkeys but is branching out to design different sock creatures who I will be able to introduce you to soon.  In the mean time, I have been patiently awaiting the arrival of Woolly Monkey...

Almost there...

Hello Woolly Monkey!  Welcome to the family!

The cast - Introducing Witchey

I'd like to introduce my good friend Witchey!

She is both a member of our cast and also a good friend.  People can sometimes be nervous around her but she is the most kind hearted of souls.  She may be green and cast the occasional spell (for good) but there is no need to fear her.  Let me tell you Witchey's story...

Witchey was born on the 31st of October and grew up in a small town called Burley in the New Forest renowned for it's history of witch craft and folklore, including a milk drinking dragon!

She didn't have many friends at school but those she did have were very special to her and have stood by her through good and bad times.  Sometimes it is hard when you are a bit different to the other children but when you find your kindred spirits, you should hold on to them forever.

Witchey has a spells degree from witch college and she enjoys nothing more than snuggling in with her favorite meal frogs legs and eye of newt soup with a good spell book.

Here is the gang preparing Witchey for her latest photo shoot.  We all work as a team here; just like one big family.

Thank you to Witchey for sharing your story with us, Mary Monkey x

The History of Sock Monkeys

As sock monkeys, Woolly Monkey and I wanted to find out more about our history and ancestors.  I suppose you could say that we are not traditional sock monkeys because we don't have the tell tale red mouth that you see on 'vintage red heel' sock monkeys but we are all the same in spirit!  So this is what we found out...

In 1868 in a place called Rockford, Illinois, a Swedish man called John Nelson designed a machine to make socks.  His sock making business grew into the Nelson Knitting Company where they made the 'Nelson Sock'.  In around 1932, John's son, Franklin Nelson designed a machine that could make seamless socks that went on to be known as the 'Rockford Red Heel'.  When the socks were worn out they were used to create our original ancestors with their traditional red mouths during the Great Depression to comfort children all across America.

Meet the Crew - Mark and Philip

Introducing our catering team!

Mark and Philip are always working hard to bring the most delightful culinary experiences to the hard working team.  Be it bananas for me and the other sock monkeys, frogs legs and eye of newt soup for Witchey or figgy pudding for Christmas Bear; they will accommodate any needs.  With Philip's creative flair and Mark's inspiration and imagination, you can guarantee a recipe for success!

With love to you both, Mary Monkey x

Meet the crew - Yvonne and Sylvia

No crew would be complete without wardrobe!

Special thanks go out to Yvonne and Sylvia for their care and dedication to fashion and design.  They have been friends since their school years and have encouraged us all with their commitment to family and friendship.  Yvonne and Sylvia have always been fashion gurus and will continue to advise with current trends and fashion; thank you for your continued hard work.

Meet the Crew - Jo

Dear all,

I'd like to introduce my creative director and photographer Jo.

She studied biology and graphical design at college.  Although she has pursued a career in Pharmacy Aseptics, she still has a passion for creativity and design.  She is a most beloved friend of mine and I thank her for her time and commitment to our joint passion for creating enjoyment and memories for our family and friends.  Everything that we are doing together now is thanks to the encouragement and support of Yvonne, Jo's mum, who believes in us and in never letting go of something you love,

Mary's New Year Resolution

Hello everybody,

Happy new year to you all!  I've had a very busy year in 2015 and as part of my new year's resolution, I have decided to tell you all about what I've been up to in the form of a 'behind the scenes' style blog.

It's the start of another exciting year and I am looking forward to starting my own website bringing together all of the hard work that we have been doing over the last few months together.

As another year begins, I'm thinking about my family and how much they mean to me.  All my books so far have got a strong family influence and my next book will be no exception.  I am busy planning my next adventure and as my blog continues, you too will be able to meet the family that I am so proud to call my own and the roles that they play in my life.

Once again, I hope that your new year brings happiness and joy to you and all those you love,

Mary Monkey x
